Mobile phone upgrades explained

  • What is an upgrade?

An upgrade is when you choose to renew your existing mobile contract with the same network provider. If you choose to switch network the industry classes this as a new connection.

A new contract with your existing number – the porting process
Many people want to take their existing number with them where they’ve built up a good network of contacts and rely on being contacted on their business mobile. This is where porting your number needs to take place. You need to obtain a Port Authorisation Code (PAC) from your existing network.

A new contract with a new number
If this is a completely new business phone or you don’t mind changing your number then you simply connect as a new customer onto your chosen network.

    Typical Upgrade scenarios

    1. You have reached the end of your existing contract and are due to renew.
You have 2 options: If you’re happy with your network you renew your contract either on the same tariff or one that better suits your current usage. You don’t have to take a new phone. If you chose to keep your handset this will result in either a discount against your line rental, increased inclusive bundle value or a cash payment made to you to inject back into your business.

    2. You are close to the end of your contract and you want a new phone.
This is the best position to be in to get the phone of your choice. According the time scales in the “When can I upgrade” section you will be assessed according to your current monthly spend and selected upgrade tariff to determine the value of the handset we can offer you. If you don’t spend enough to get the phone of your choice for free you will be quoted a price to pay to cover the cost of the phone.

    3. Your business requirements have changed and you want to change devices before you are due an upgrade.
In this instance you can't change networks unless you pay a termination fee which is typically the sum total of your monthly line rental for the rest of your contract period. To upgrade the handsets you can choose to trade in the existing devices to get some money towards purchasing new SIM free models.

Upgrading with O2

You can upgrade to a new mobile phone after the first 12 months of your contract (for those on 12-month contracts). However, if you’re on a longer-term contract (for those on 24-month or 36-month contracts) you may have different Terms & Conditions, please call your Account Manager or the Business Customer Services to find out your eligibility.

To find out if you are eligible for an upgrade Simply call your Account Manager, our Sales Team or the Business Customer Services team, the contact number can be found at the top of our site or call 0800 049 6000 to find out.

How much it will cost to upgrade early depends on your service, how far you are into your contract and prices may vary.

Upgrading with Vodafone

Vodafone lines can be upgraded up to 45 days prior to your contract end date (as long as they were bought through Carphone Warehouse Business). You get a new 24 month contract and the additional time willl be added onto the new contract. However, the best advice is to delay the upgrade as long as possible so as to get the maximum contribution towards your new phone.

Upgrading with EE

If you're an EE customer already with us then you are able to upgrade up to 90 days prior to your contract end date, however please note that your remaining term with EE will be rolled over to your new EE contract. If you are new to us wishing to upgrade an existing contract purchased elsewhere or direct from EE you can upgrade within the last 30 days of your contract.

Moving from Orange or T-Mobile to EE – a unique early upgrade opportunity
EE is the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile and they all share the same 3G network, therefore if you're an existing Orange or T-Mobile customer and have your existing contract connected through Carphone Warehouse Business you are able to upgrade onto an EE 4G tariff 90-180 days prior to your contract end date. If you do upgrade early from Orange or T-Mobile to EE then your remaining term will be rolled over to the new contract with a 33% discount applied to it.
