In 2021, ratings on energy efficiency are being overhauled. On fridges, washing machines, washer dryers and dishwashers, the A+++ rating symbols will be replaced with something that is easier to follow - a simple scale of A-G ratings.

Why are ratings for energy efficiency changing?

Around 20 years ago, energy efficiency labels were introduced. Products would get an 'A' for good efficiency, and an 'F' for low efficiency. Over time, with ratings of A+, A++ and A+++ being added, this system became more complex (and confusing).

These A+ ratings are being phased out in order to make things clearer for customers. A simple A to G ranking system will instead be used to rate refrigerators, wine cellars, washing machines, washer dryers and dishwashers.

What happens next?

The current energy ratings will be on new products launched between June 2020 and March 2021, but you'll find labels for both the new and old rating systems in the box. This will only happen during this period of transition while the old ratings are being phased out.

From March 2021, online and in-store products will have labels with a new energy efficiency ranking system from A to G.

Also, the new labels will feature handy QR codes. For extra information, you will be able to scan them on your smartphone.
